This round's spot prize: a bottle of wine to the first player to make a play that stays on a triple word score square.

At Board 1 in this last round of the initial round robin, it's top two seeds Theresa Brousson (MLT) and Helen Gipson (Sco).

Game highlights:

  • Brousson gets away with an audacious opening phoney sIFAKIS (86), a Greek surname.
  • Gipson catches up with her second-turn bingo EGOTISES (77) and leads 109-108.
  • Brousson misses OUTFOxES to an S, but loses only about four points of equity; OUTFOxES would have hung the O out at A6. It would also have given Gipson PETAFLOP on her next turn through the F.
  • On turn five, Brousson bingoes 1A BANlIEUE (77) and leads by 75, but Gipson holds EINOPRT and replies ATROPINE (74) to come within a point of Brousson, 239-238.
  • For the next three turns, Gipson has 7-point racks and makes close to optimal low-scoring plays keeping excellent leaves, falling behind further as Brousson plays the Q and X and bingoes RIGHTERS for a 448-270 lead.
  • Gipson manages to set up and fish out ALANINE leaving six in the bag, but it's too late. Even with DGHRRRU on Brousson's rack, Brousson is over 99% to win.

Mbeleokpo Mathew Aganaba (NGA) loses 70 points on overtime penalties, but beats Alfred Xuereb (MLT) 367-364.
