John Barker (AUS) is +1138, on a 3-game winning streak, remaining steady at #7. Nicky Vella-Laurenti (MLT) is 6 games behind the leader at 17-9 +1566, on a 4-game winning streak, #8 rising from #10. Cecil Muscat (MLT) is +1485, #9 falling from #6. Nuala O'Rourke (NIr) is +410, #10 slipping from #9.

High Win: Howard Warner (NZL) 569-389 vs. Mihai Pantis (ROM). Low Win: Mary Morgan (IRL) 348-301 vs. Marion Loewenstein (ISR). High Loss: Josephine Mayo (MLT) 415-434 vs. John Barker (AUS). Low Loss: Brid Ni Bhriain (IRL) 265-515 vs. Janet Bonham (Eng).

At Board 1, it's Chris Lipe (USA) vs. Helen Gipson (Sco) on video and data.

Game highlights:

  • Lipe opens up a narrow early lead: after three turns each he leads 86-74. It widens after they trade bingoes: Lipe's IRONIZe (92) to Gipson's ACETONE.
  • Lipe's post-bingo draw was ?BEPRTT, Gipson's ADEIINU.
  • Lipe bingoes the next turn with PROTYLEs (missing PORTERLY), now leads by 102.
  • Two turns later, Gipson gets back in the game with ENSEALED (80), now trails by 27.
  • The next turn, Gipson regains a 41-point lead with GHERAOS (92). Nine left in the bag, and Lipe is holding CFGIQRT with places to play QI, but Gipson draws AADPRSX.
  • Lipe plays QI (24), Gipson replies AX (38) and is up 55 holding ADEPRSS to Lipe's CFFGRTV. Lipe makes the correct play, GIF (18), which gives him 60:1 odds against winning, assuming a random set of tiles on Gipson's rack.

Mihai Pantis (ROM) played three bingoes to Howard Warner's (NZL) five in their game. Mihai played STIGMATA, SANTERA and PELORIA; he could have played LIGHTEST but tried LEIGHEST* instead. Howard played MURAENID, INERTIAE, BLOUSED, OBSCENER and INFANTAS. The players did not find the game remarkable enough to save it for a photo; I do have one in the regular coverage from fairly late in the game.
