First round of the last day, eight games to play. Simon Gillam (Sco) vs. Helen Gipson (Sco) at Board 1, streaming video and data feeds.

Game highlights:

  • Gipson opens with a 40-point phoney, which Gillam accepts.
  • Gillam makes a double double through a P in the third position from MACHINE, but misses the 8.
  • Gipson makes the theme play of the event: mALTESE (82).
  • Gillam makes a 31-point play keeping NNN and draws a fourth N. He plays off one N, and draws another. He plays that off and ends up with the rack DNNNQSW before exchanging DNNQW to get AEGNSUU. He'll redraw the Q three turns later.
  • Gipson misses a 90-point natural bingo with AIISTVZ in favour of a mere 68-point play (she did think of it when she drew the rack, but the E wasn't available until Gillam played, by which point she had misremembered which tile she was waiting for).

First result in: Cecil Muscat (MLT) 453 Daniel Milton (USA) 346. Cecil says he had 19 minutes left on his clock.
