Our start is unavoidably delayed by half an hour due to last-minute cancellations; we'll make up some of the lost time at lunch.

We have 22 players in the upper division, and 24 players in the lower division, competing for a total of €500 in prizes. The players come from eight countries, thanks to Malta's central location, and the reputation of the event's ten-year history.

I think I may not have been the only overseas player who had some difficulty finding flights to this year's event; after flying in from Frankfurt earlier this week in a plane full of EU functionaries, I learned that Malta is currently in a six-month term of presidency of the European Union, resulting in a huge increase in conference travel to this otherwise extremely popular holiday destination.
