Off to an on-time start for most games, which bodes well for the length of the lunch break. Thanks to Paul Richards (AUS) for going back to his hotel at the last minute to make sure that we had enough playing equipment

As expected, none of the Nigerian registrants have arrived yet, though past experience suggests that they may still show up in the next few days.

Owing to some confusion as to the status of a player who had played in the Early Bird, but dropped out of the Main Event, we had to call up our reserve player, Moses Azzopardi, and then also ask Joe A Caruana (MLT) to play his first game in the upper division and the rest in the lower. We appreciate their flexibility.

I have a fellow countryman from Canada, Ryan Smith (CAN) of Halifax, NS, who is competing in his first competitive Scrabble event anywhere; good luck to him. I had no trouble identifying him, because of his spoken English was completely lacking any trace of a foreign accent.
